The Prism Photo Workshop offers education, resources, mentoring, funding, professional development and community to visual journalists from traditionally underrepresented communities including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities. We do this through grants, scholarships, mentoring and a yearly workshop. We believe there should be no barriers to access and have a pay-what-you-can model for attendance.
We believe it is imperative that news organizations – and the journalists who represent them – are credible and diligent and that they reflect our communities accurately and faithfully. We support young photographers from diverse backgrounds to tell the stories of underrepresented people and communities with dignity.
The Prism Photo Workshop is seeking a part-time operations manager to begin work in November 2023. The manager’s primary task – in collaboration with Prism Photo Workshop co-directors – will be to handle communications and coordination for our annual in-person workshop, ensuring that our community’s needs are reflected in the educational programs we offer and to continue our work building community for Chicagoland photographers from diverse backgrounds.
Responsibilities will include conducting audience surveys, then using that information to determine the agenda and speakers for future workshops. The operations manager will confirm speakers and work with them on presentations throughout Winter 2024. They will also manage logistic planning for the workshop such as communication, catering, organizing volunteers and day-of coordination in preparation for the next in-person workshop in Spring 2024.
Additionally, our operations manager will be responsible for expanding our reach by connecting with schools and other visual organizations in the Chicagoland area. They’ll write twice-monthly newsletters and post to the Prism Photo Workshop social media accounts in order to spread news of upcoming events and opportunities, including our annual grant and scholarship offerings.
Our ideal candidate will have:
At least a year of professional communications experience
Familiarity with photo editors, educators, professional photographers and student photographers in the Chicago photojournalism industry; or the willingness to become familiar with our community
The ability to manage a project from start to finish while collaborating with others
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Technical proficiency with Google Drive, Wix/SquareSpace and Mailchimp
The ability to clearly communicate in writing and in person
A commitment to building community for photographers in the Chicagoland area
